How to Restore Accidentally Deleted Bookmarks on Chrome

What if they get deleted? Yeah, one day you see all of them gone. Or you accidentally deleted every single one of your bookmarks. How can you cope up with it? Moreover, how can you restore them? Note: You will find two methods for doing this while the first method will work for most of you, The second one can be applied by only those people who use chrome on multiple devices.

Restoring Deleted Bookmarks on Chrome

Step 1: Maybe, your fingers have slipped that you deleted the entire bookmarks folder. And, now you want to restore them. Keep the Chrome browser in the state you have now. Don’t do anything.

Step 2: Now, you have to trigger the Run dialogue box. For that, you can press Win key+ R. It will suddenly show a dialogue box on the right-bottom part of the screen.

Step 3: At this step, copy the following path into the field given there and press Enter. Make sure you don’t alter the path in any way.

Step 4: What you get is a file browser window with a special folder opened. It is the folder for the Chrome browser, where all information about it is stored. You can see many folders there. Scroll down a bit to the bottom to see two files; Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak.

Step 5: The first one without extension is the live file with all your current bookmarks are placed. The second one with .bak extension contains the backup of the bookmark folder taken when you last closed the browser. What we are going to do is to take a copy of the .bak file.

For that, press and hold the right button on the file and drag to another portion. From the context menu that pops up, you can select Copy here. It will create a copy of the same file on the same location.

Step 6: Now that we have taken care of the backup, we need to make it the primary live bookmark file. So, you need to delete the other two files. Click on it and then select the next one by holding the Ctrl key on the keyboard.

Step 7: Once you delete the two files, you have to rename the copied file. You can rename it to Bookmarks without any extension. Putting bak extension again will make it a backup file. So, you must not do that.

Step 8: The final step is verifying the bookmarks. Make sure you followed all the steps given above. When you finish Step 7, you can move on to opening the Chrome browser. Open it up and check the bookmarks bar. Don’t forget to open all the folders there if you have any.

Maybe, you won’t get a few latest additions. Still, you can avail most of them.

What should you do if it doesn’t work out for you? Well, you can try scanning the C drive (or the drive, you installed the browser into) for lost bookmarks. However, if you are not that familiar with computers or don’t want to scan the entire C Drive then you can do the following.

Method for Recovering Chrome Bookmarks (if you use multiple computers)

If you use Chrome on multiple computers and have logged into all of those using the same google account then your bookmarks will get synced among all computers. Now if you have deleted all the bookmarks from one computer what you can do is start another computer and discontent the internet on it. Next, open chrome on it, and go to bookmarks from settings. Now when you are at the bookmarks page you can export all your bookmarks to make a local backup of it.

Once you have taken a local backup of all your bookmarks you can connect your computer to the internet, you will immediately see that your bookmarks are gone. Don’t worry open bookmarks manager from settings and bookmarks from the local file whilch you just exported. Now you will have all your chrome bookmarks recovered.
